Crest Summer Camps

Posted By Kathy Zurich-Lunsford, Tuesday, May 07, 2013

Enrolling for Summer City Camps Now!

Looking for something for your kids to do this summer?  Give one of CREST’s convenient and affordable City Camps a try!

Camps begin June 12.  Full- and half-day camps are offered at multiple locations for youth ages 8-14.  All camps take weekly excursions to theme parks and local attractions.  Outing transportation and daily lunch are included.  Choose a camp that best fits your and your child(ren)’s needs.

Santa Monica Sports Experience has a new line-up this summer!  A different sport or organized game is highlighted each week, including the annual Pinewood Derby Race where participants can design, build and race their own car!  Additional weekly themes are virtual sports gaming, lacrosse, black-top hockey, dodge ball and more.  Both full- or half-day options are available at John Adams Middle School.

Wrap-Around Camp provides a fun, action-packed summer camp experience at McKinley Elementary School for your 4th or 5th grader who is attending summer school.  Participants stay onsite and easily transition from their summer school classrooms to a half-day camp featuring sports, games and special events.

Camp Santa Monica at Virginia Avenue Park offers four innovative specialty groups that will give your child the opportunity to explore his or her own personal interests.  Campers can sign up for a full-day or week of Art Extravaganza, Fit & Fun, Science Solvers or the ever popular, Water Adventures where the name of the game is getting wet!

Generous Financial Assistance subsidizing up to 90% of camp fees are available to qualifying Santa Monica residents based on a sliding scale.  Nonresidents attending summer school at McKinley Elementary School are eligible while summer school is in-session only.  Low- to moderate-income families are encouraged to apply prior to registration.  To receive an application, visit www.smgov.net/financialassistance.

Weekly costs for half-day are $123 for residents and $133 for nonresidents.  Weekly costs for full-day are $200 for residents and $220 for nonresidents.  Extended care in the early morning and evenings are available for an additional $35 per week.

For more information, contact the City of Santa Monica’s Youth Office located at Reed Park at 310-458-8540.  Enroll online now at www.smgov.net/recenroll

Santa Monica Police Department - Bicycle Safety Tips

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, April 30, 2013

            Santa Monica Police Department
                       Bicycle Safety Tips

In California, bicycle fatalities have decreased, due in part to the education of bicyclists and awareness of motorists.
Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians share the roadway and the responsibility to ride safely.
Bicyclists are responsible for obeying the same rules of the road as drivers of vehicles.

Stop at stop signs, use proper hand signals for turning and stopping, and obey traffic signals.
Make sure you see the vehicles, and that the drivers are aware of you!
Stay focused and stay alert.  Ride defensively; try to anticipate and predict what motorists may do.

·         Obey traffic rules.  Get acquainted with ordinances.  Cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists.

·         When riding at night, the law requires a front white headlight emitting a white light that, while the bicycle is in motion, illuminates the highway, sidewalk, or bikeway in front of the bicyclist and is visible from a distance of 300 feet in front and from the sides of the bicycle. (VC 21201(1))

·         A red reflector on the rear of the bicycle that shall be visible from a distance of 500 feet to the rear when directly in front of lawful upper beam of headlamps on a motor vehicle. (VC 21201 (2))

·         A white or yellow reflector on each pedal, shoe, or ankle visible from the front and rear of the bicycle from a distance of 200 feet. (VC 21201 (3))

·         Ride on the road.  Sidewalks are for pedestrians, and in Santa Monica bicycles are prohibited on sidewalks.  SMMC 3.12.540(a)

·         Stop at ALL stop signs and red lights.

·         Make safe turns and use hand signals to let drivers know the direction you will be traveling.  Signal as a matter of law, courtesy, and self-protection.

·         Make eye contact with drivers – assume that other drivers don’t see you until you are sure that they do.

·         Lock your bike when you’re gone.  Buy the best lock you can afford, none is as expensive as a new bike.  A U-shaped high security lock is best.  Lock the frame and rear wheel to a fixed object.  If you have a quick release, you should also lock the front wheel.

·         Choose the best way to turn left – there are two choices: (1) Like an auto: signal to move into the left turn lane and then turn left.  (2) Like a pedestrian: ride straight to the far crosswalk and walk your bike across.

·         Don’t get "doored.” Dooring is one of the leading causes of bicycle collisions in the Los Angeles area.  Ride far enough from parked cars that you can avoid suddenly

opened doors.
·         Wear a helmet!  Head injuries cause about two-thirds of all bicycling fatalities.

·         Honor others’ right of way and Watch the Road!

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, April 30, 2013
This message is sent on behalf of the Santa Monica Police Activities League (SM PAL).

GOLFERS AND TENNIS PLAYERS WANTED TO RAISE FUNDS
FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS

LAKER LEGEND JAMES WORTHY AND SANTA MONICA POLICE CHIEF
HOST SANTA MONICA POLICE ACTIVITES LEAGUE FUNDRAISER

SANTA MONICA, CA (April 17, 2013) – Golfers and tennis players can help Santa Monica youth and have a great time on the course and court at the Santa Monica Police Activities League’s Annual Charity Golf & Tennis Classic on Monday, June 10, 2013. Los Angeles Lakers legend and one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, James Worthy, is scheduled to host hundreds of police officers, their supporters, and children at the prestigious MountainGate Country Club in Los Angeles. All proceeds from the event will raise funds for educational scholarships, arts enrichment, physical fitness, and healthy living programs.

The Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL) is a free drop-in center that fosters trust between youth and the men and women of the Santa Monica Police Department in a safe and nurturing environment. Programs at Santa Monica PAL are free of charge and available to youth 6 - 17 years of age who live or attend school in Santa Monica.

Proceeds benefit the Santa Monica PAL community center programs such as college preparatory classes, homework assistance, computer enrichment, scholarships, culinary arts education, artist-in-residence programs, nutrition workshops, fitness activities, and fitness supplies.

The day begins with golf registration followed by a four-person scramble format. After lunch, tennis warm up and play begins. Youths from the center participate in the play. A silent auction is held throughout the day culminating in dinner, live auction and award ceremony featuring seven-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Champion James Worthy and Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks. Worthy was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.

Golf foursomes and tennis spots are available by calling the PAL office at (310) 458-8988.
