On Sunday, February 8th, 2015, Upward Bound House, based in Santa Monica and focused on fighting family homelessness, will be presenting the third annual Home Run for Kids 5K, 10K and Kiddie K in the Brentwood community of West Los Angeles. We are excited to announce that registration is now open! Just click here to get started:  Please join us again if you were there last year!  Last year, close to 30 people from Lincoln ran and we are hoping from more this year!!!!  Prizes!!!!
The event includes food, a family fun expo and a stroller and dog friendly chip-timed course that can be walked or run. The course is a loop on beautiful San Vicente in Brentwood.  Please select team Lincoln when you register.
All proceeds will benefit Upward Bound House, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Upward Bound House’s mission is to eliminate family homelessness in Los Angeles.  Upward Bound House has established an extraordinary record of success in addressing family homelessness. Since 1997, we have helped more than 800 families – including over 1,600 children – transition from homelessness into permanent housing. Over 95% of these families were still in their homes a year after placement.   Any questions?  Please contact Ysette Witteveen at  Thank you.

Franklin's Book Fair

Posted By Administration, Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Packed with new and popular titles, nifty gifts and accessories, this year’s Holiday Book Fair has something for everyone on your list!  We’ve got tasty treats and healthy snacks along with fresh brew to fuel your foray…plus we’re OPEN ALL WEEK, so there’s no excuse not to stop and shop!

Support Franklin while helping others!  Once again, our community has an opportunity to spread extra holiday cheer, by purchasing books for kids battling serious illnesses through Children’s Hospital Los Angeles “Literally Healing” program.  Buy a book to donate from the Hospital’s ‘Wish List’ (on display at Book Fair) and make an immediate impact on a child who is spending the holidays in the hospital.  And with every book donation - a portion of all purchase proceeds benefits Franklin too!

The Holiday Book Fair will be open in Franklin’s Cafetorium:

Monday December 8th:  1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

Tuesday December 9th: 8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Wednesday December 10th: 8:30 am to 2:00 pm

Thursday December 11th:  8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Friday December 12th: 8:30 am to 1:00 pm

Can’t make it during the day?  You, your family & friends can shop at home! Visit our ONLINE BOOK FAIR that runs concurrently and after, beginning Dec 3rd – 23rd.  All online orders will be delivered to Franklin following winter break.  To preview titles and link to all fair information, visit

Got questions?  Please contact Kim Orchen Cooper at, or email Leanna Einbinder at about the Literally Healing program.  Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Holiday Book Fair!!

S.T.E.A.M. Machines at the Santa Monica Pier

Posted By Karen Rigberg, Thursday, October 30, 2014

Heal the Bay and Time Warner Cable are presenting the second annual S.T.E.A.M. Machines, a day-long festival of interactive science, technology, engineering and math activities using art as the medium and fun as the common denominator from 11:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. November 15, 2014.

“Heal the Bay's Santa Monica Pier Aquarium is hosting this STEAM event because we value science education as a way to cultivate better environmental stewards.,” explained Aquarium Director Heather Doyle.

Join S.T.E.A.M. Machines at the east end of the Pier and check out the curious contraptions entered in the Los Angeles region’s inaugural Rube Goldberg Contest, alongside a kaleidoscope of innovative exhibitors.  Trash For Teaching will stage a make-your-own recycling machine station; try games galore courtesy Marbles the Brain Store; check out a 3D printer in action; and Pacific Park and iFly will present a thrilling physics lesson (think roller coasters and the Pacific Wheel). This day of innovation also includes tasty treats by Peddlers Creamery: artisan quality ice cream and non-dairy frozen delights churned by bicycle power; has to be seen – and tasted - to be believed.

The S.T.E.A.M. theme continues at Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, beach level just beneath the Carousel – where guests can pilot an underwater ROV, play with solar robots  and participate in an ocean explorers presentation

"The Pier has always been a place to inspire young minds, but with the expertise of Heal The Bay and TWC's Connect A Million Minds initiative, we've got a powerful platform for delivering STEM education in a really fun and novel way," said Pier Administrator Jay Farrand.

A significant donation from Time Warner Cable helps support STEM education and outreach; a big thank you to the Santa Monica Pier Corporation for hosting S.T.E.A.M. Machines and for supporting playful learning in greater Los Angeles.
